Brazilian Blowout 101

We can credit the Brazilians with the wax, the butt lift, and now the blowout. Although not a new process, the Brazilian smoothing system, also known as the Brazilian blowout, recently received heightened media attention due to Jennifer Aniston’s new chop. So let’s cover our basis: What is a Brazilian blowout? It’s a keratin-based smoothing treatment that creates a protective layer over the hair shaft, which eliminates frizz and creates shine. To learn more about the process, I turned to Cassie Harwood at Salon Ruggeri in N.Y.C.

Harwood is particularly a fan of Brazilian Blowout Professional Smoothing Treatments in comparison to other keratin-smoothing treatments because she can control the amount of body left in the hair. “Brazilian Blowout gives you the option of different temperature controls, which gives the best personalized results for each client,” said Harwood. The process takes at most two hours and is surprisingly gentle on your hair; you can even color and wash your hair the same day. Other treatments require you to wait 72 hours before getting your hair wet or even clipping it back. Additionally, the Brazilian Blowout has no lingering smell. The treatment can be used on all hair types: straight, curly, color-treated and damaged.

A Brazilian blowout is costly, but for those of us with unruly hair it may be a small price to pay for lustrous locks and peace of mind. You can expect more manageable and shiny strands, as well as decreased drying time, for 12 weeks if cared for properly. Special shampoos and conditioners have been formulated to help extend the life of your treatment. Furthermore, Brazilian Blowout offers Zero+, their zero percent formaldehyde version that yields just as amazing results.
