Mother Nature can be a mean, mean woman sometimes. Case in point: Hurricane “Superstorm” Sandy in 2012. Today marks the two-year anniversary for the storm that created massive destruction along the New York and New Jersey coasts. Sandy caused $62 billion in damage and 125 deaths in the U.S. and left 7.5 million people without power at the height of the storm. In the storm’s aftermath, the recovery process began with focus on preparing the states against another storm. Manhattan strengthened protection around its power plant so prevent the city from losing power again. A new sea wall was constructed to protect New Jersey towns. Homes were bit higher to avoid flood waters; barriers were built taller. Long Island rebuilt its legendary boardwalk. Even companies were born from the disaster. While volunteering after the storm, Jennifer Walsh was inspired by everyone’s generosity and desire to help. She launched Pride & Glory, a collegiate beauty brand with a purpose — 2 percent of profits from the sale of each item goes back to the charity of the chosen school.
