The Power of Paper: Jewelry Company 31 Bits Empowers Women in Uganda http://magazinemv.com/inform/business/31-bits http://magazinemv.com/inform/business/31-bits#comments Thu, 07 Aug 2014 16:55:31 +0000 http://magazinemv.com/?p=6327 31 Bits cuff braceletWhen Kallie Dovel traveled to Uganda in 2007 to help in an orphanage, she had no idea how many lives she was about to positively influence, including her own and her friends. During that trip she met women who lived in areas that provided no financial opportunities. Then she made another observation: These women were talented and hand rolling beautiful jewelry from used paper. Dovel thought if only they had a market, a place to sell, then they could make money and pull themselves out of poverty, send their children to school and more.

Soon thereafter, Dovel returned to the United States with a box of jewelry; the jewelry pieces were a hit. In 2008, she teamed up with her friends to launch 31 Bits, a socially conscious jewelry company that empowers women in Northern Uganda to rise above poverty. The founders started out with six women from North Uganda but the program has grown dramatically. 31 Bits has now helped more than 100 women.

31 Bits necklace31 Bits’ name is derived from Proverbs 31, which describes a diligent woman providing and caring for her family. The “bits” comes from what the beads are made of bits of paper. 31 Bits has been able to provide Ugandan women with incomes as well as a five-year holistic development program. The program provides each woman with health education, finance training, counseling, and business training. “She belongs to a community where she can earn an income, be educated, and dream for her future. After five years in our program, the women graduate, leaving with an education, a career, social equity, confidence, and a voice. We now have 120 women in our program whose lives are changed. Their children’s lives are changed. Their community is changed, and we got to be a part of it,” says Courtney Frantz, 31 Bits office manager.

31 Bits’ product repertoire now includes bangles, belts, a wedding line, purses, headbands, earrings and necklaces, which are available for purchase on 31bits.com. For customers who want to do more than purchase, Frantz suggest becoming part of the 31 Bits mission through volunteer or internship opportunities. “For those of you that don’t live in Southern California, we recommend you become a 31 Bits House Party Host! You’ll give your friends and family an opportunity to make powerful purchases …purchases that are changing women’s lives in Uganda,” says Frantz.

Alex and Ani Founder Carolyn Rafaelian is Changing the World for the Better http://magazinemv.com/fashion/alex-and-ani-founder-carolyn-rafaelian http://magazinemv.com/fashion/alex-and-ani-founder-carolyn-rafaelian#comments Tue, 15 Oct 2013 11:00:05 +0000 http://magazinemv.com/?p=3841 CarolynRafaelian
The name Carolyn Rafaelian is on the rise. Even if her name doesn’t sound familiar, most women and young girls recognize or wear the jewelry brand Rafaelian launched 10 years ago. Alex and Ani, based in Rhode Island, is smart, simple, eco-friendly with relatable designs at every price point.

The success of Alex and Ani is threefold: There’s Rafaelian; she is the essence behind the jewelry company. There is the expandable bangle concept, which fits every woman, and lastly, there are price points and design options for every style and budget.

Rafaelian is no stranger to the jewelry industry. She grew up in the business; her father opened a factory in 1966. “Early on, my summers were spent helping my father, which eventually led to designing my own pieces,” said Rafaelian.

The family connection continues. Rafaelian has three daughters, Alex, Ani and Alivia. “It wasn’t until my first two daughters, Alex and Ani, were born that I decided I wanted to leave a legacy for them. Stemming from a family tradition, it was my destiny to become a jewelry designer. The eco-friendly concept along with the products being completely made in America went hand and hand with the designs.”

Alex and Ani are in college. Alivia is in middle school. One day they will join their mother and help launch Alex and Ani into a new stratosphere. For now, they help in their own way. “Family has and will always be a continuous source of inspiration for our designs at Alex and Ani. My inspirations and aspirations for our brand stem from my family and my heart. I am truly inspired by my daughters’ spirit and energy.”

Alex and Ani was founded prior to the cusp of the green movement. The company is one of the last jewelry manufacturers in the United States that does not import product. Each piece made from recycled materials purchased from local Rhode Island mills and is made in the United States. “It’s important that we continue to produce everything here in the U.S.A. because we adhere to higher environmental standards and rules for waste management and chemical disposal compared to other countries.”

Every year Inc magazine compiles a list of the fasting-growing companies in America. The 2013 Inc 500 | Inc 5000 edition listed Alex and Alex at number 94. This summer Rafaelian and Alex and Ani CEO Giovanni Feroce spoke at the University of Rhode Island’s commencement exercises. The company also gives back through Charity by Design, the humanitarian branch of Alex and Ani, which offers specially created designs for nonprofits such as Living Water, Because I Am a Girl, Arms of Strength and more to help empower the nonprofits.

The expandable wire bangle launched a world of possibility. The one-size-fits-all concept is the ideal bangle that expands and fits everyone. “I love that women come in all shapes and sizes, so I created these bangles with women in mind,” said Rafaelian.

Through the concept, Alex and Ani is able to offer dozens of design options. Customers can purchase a single bangle with a meaningful design, or an entire collection based on themes—armed forces, birth stones, professional sports teams, Moroccan refuge, spiritual words or symbols, sororities, and yes, more—are available. There are also rings, earrings and necklaces. There is a design for every personality.

If you are curious, one of Rafaelian’s favorite designs is the Path of Life. “I love the meaning behind it because those three words, Path of Life, really resonate with people. We all have a path, but most times we’re so busy that we don’t stop to question what it is. When you look at that symbol you remember that you’ve been chosen to do a task, to have an experience. It’s a gentle reminder to get up every day and honor that directive—to make it matter, in ways both big and small.”

The truth is wearing an Alex and Ani bangle feels good and brings positive energy, and isn’t that the true reason for jewelry?

In the Life of Vintage Jewelry Collector, Karry Berreby http://magazinemv.com/fashion/in-the-life-of-vintage-jewelry-collector-karry-berreby http://magazinemv.com/fashion/in-the-life-of-vintage-jewelry-collector-karry-berreby#comments Sat, 15 Jun 2013 16:35:31 +0000 http://magazinemv.com/?p=2350 KarryBerreby_BioVintage jewelry is forever, and luckily, there’s plenty to go around. While estate sales, flea markets and vintage shops are a constant, discovering a prized piece takes a developed eye and the ability to see the allure in certain pieces.

Karry Berreby is in a niche of her own. She doesn’t necessarily seek jewelry dripped in gold and diamonds. Instead she scours for rare couture pieces. “I look for sophistication and elegance. I examine the proportions, the materials and the ‘allure’ of the jewelry. I also pay attention to the colors.”

Well-versed in full-on glamour, Berreby has drawers and drawers of bijoux from the 1950s to the 1970s. No vintage and antique designer is too small or big. She knows them all: Balenciago, Bulgari, Cardin, Chamet, Ossie Clark, David Webb, Givenchy, Madame Grès, Jacques Fath, Van Cleef & Arpels and Yves Saint Laurent. “I love the weathered gem and not the jewel that shines. Vintage jewelry is just classic and sophisticated.”

“Personally, I think it is very important for women to wear jewelry because jewelry contribute to a style, a personality, a look. Women, who wear jewelry, acquire a touch of femininity,” says Berreby. The collector also has an appreciation for worn antique watches.

Her finds are at Karry Berreby, a jewelry company for style mavens that launched two years ago and is special appointments only. For years she operated the famed Paris boutique Karry’O on rue des Saints Pères, which she closed a few years ago to make room for new opportunities.

The Parisian beauty attended Studio Berçot in Paris and has always been self-employed. There has been one significant influence. “My grandmother was a very elegant woman,” says Berreby. “She influenced my perceptive on jewels. I would compare her to ‘La Callas,’ Maria Callas in the role of [La Traviata’s] Violetta at the Royal Opera House in London.”

Not one to rest on her laurels, Berreby is pursing new passions. She launched BK Spa, a treatment center in a typical Parisian apartment in November 2012. Beauty addicts receive treatments (ayurvedic massage, reflexology, lymphatic draining and muscular facial massage) by top professionals. The property’s minimalist décor, private all-white rooms with hardwood floors, tall ceilings and fireplaces, create quite the Zen zone. Berreby also is opening a boutique hosting a gallery of objects, furniture and jewels. The eponymous boutique is located at rue de Lille (Paris 7è).

ASSAEL Launches New Collection With Angela Cummings http://magazinemv.com/fashion/assael-launches-new-collection-with-angela-cummings http://magazinemv.com/fashion/assael-launches-new-collection-with-angela-cummings#comments Fri, 05 Apr 2013 03:14:16 +0000 http://magazinemv.com/?p=1063 Renowned jewelry designer, Angela Cummings has come out of ” retirement”  to design a new collection of sea-inspired precious jewelry for the illustrious South Sea Pearl purveyor, Assael and we have it first and exclusively in Florida at Neiman Marcus Palm Beach.  MV spoke with Angela this week after her return from New York where the collection launched at the Four Seasons to an exclusive crowd of fans and clients. ” It was almost over- whelming,” said Angela, ” it was a beautiful event and I was truly over joyed.”
Born in Austria, Angela Cummings moved to the United States with her family at age three. She returned to Europe to study at the Art Academy in Perugia, Italy, and in 1967 earned degrees in goldsmithing and gemology from Zeichenakademie in Hanau, West Germany. Upon graduation, she moved to New York and immediately joined Tiffany & Company, where she remained until 1984. After creating her first full collection under her own name in 1975, she became one of a small group of well-known, innovative jewelry designers (along with Paloma Picasso, Jean Schlumberger, and Elsa Peretti) associated with Tiffany.

This association with Assael says Angela was ” more like old friends coming together” than a business partnership. ” I’ve known all of those involved for many years and it just felt comfortable. It just came out. I don’t want to say it was effortless, but the design process was just a pleasure. ” Always seeking inspiration from nature, Angela says that this particular collection for Assael was visually drawn from the ” softness and natural forms” of the pearls and the movement of the sea.

You can view thirty pieces from this special collection when it arrives at Neiman Marcus Palm Beach.
